Average magnification effect of clumping of matter

چکیده
The aim of this paper is to reexamine the question of the average magnification in a universe with some inhomogeneously distributed matter. We present an analytic proof, valid under rather general conditions, including clumps of any shape and size, and strong lensing, that so long as the clumps are uncorrelated the average reciprocal magnification (in only one of at least four possible meanings of the words) is precisely the same as in a homogeneous universe with equal mean density. We also discuss, in the context of observations of discrete and extended sources, the physical significance of the various different measures of magnification and the circumstances in which they are appropriate. The interpretation of quasar, type 1A supernovae and cosmic microwave background data could be significantly biased if the wrong measure is employed.

A New Method for Determining Cumulative Gravitational Lensing Effects in Inhomogeneous Universes
We present a new approach to calculating the statistical distributions for magnification, shear, and rotation of images of cosmological sources due to gravitational lensing. In this approach one specifies an underlying Robertson-Walker cosmological model together with relevant information on the clumping of matter on scales much smaller than the Hubble radius. The geodesic deviation equation is...
متن کاملangular magnification measurements consistent with an inhomogeneous critical density Universe ?
The propagation of light through a Universe of (a) isothermal mass spheres amidst (b) a homogeneous matter component, is considered. We demonstrate by an analytical proof that as long as a small light bundle passes through sufficient number of (a) at various impact parameters-a criterion of great importance-its average convergence will in the weak lensing limit exactly compensate the divergence...
متن کاملStatistics of Magnification Perturbations by Substructure in the Cold Dark Matter Cosmological Model
We study the statistical properties of magnification perturbations by substructures in strong lensed systems using linear perturbation theory and an analytical substructure model including tidal truncation and a continuous substructure mass spectrum. We demonstrate that magnification perturbations are dominated by perturbers found within roughly a tidal radius of an image, and that sizable magn...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Spatial Resolution and Field of View with Change of Magnification in VRX CT
Introduction: Variable resolution x-ray (VRX) CT is a new type of CT that can image objects at various spatial resolutions. In a VRX CT scanner, the spatial resolution increases at the cost of reduction in the field of view (FOV). An important factor that limits the spatial resolution of the VRX CT is the effect of focal spot size. Also, the optimum magnification is different at each incident a...

Aims. To investigate the effect of gravitational lensing of supernovae in large ongoing surveys. Methods. We simulate the effect of gravitational lensing magnification on individual supernovae using observational data input from two large supernova surveys. To estimate the magnification due to matter in the foreground, we simulate galaxy catalogs and compute the magnification along individual l...
